Shell Powers Refinery with Solar-Gas-Battery Hybrid Technology

Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation comes “clean” on its electricity usage at its 110,000 barrels per-day Tabangao refinery in the Philippines via its deployment of hybrid technology that amalgamates the use of solar, battery energy storage system and natural gas. The integrated energy solution for the company’s refinery is up for completion next year – with the solar farm development kicking off next month; while the 3.0 megawatt-hour battery storage will be installed second quarter of 2020.

California Blackouts: Keeping the Lights on with Solar Energy

Hundreds of thousands of homes in California lost power early on Wednesday as windy, dry weather increased the risk of fire, prompting the electric utility, PG&E, to shut down the grid to avoid any chance of the type of power-line accident that sparked the deadly wildfire in the small town of Paradise less than a year ago. It may take days for the power to come back on. But at some homes, solar and battery storage systems are keeping the lights on.

NIPSCO to Replace Coal with 2.3 GW of Solar, Storage in Latest RFP

The Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) announced on Oct. 1 a request for proposals for 300 MW of wind, 2,300 MW of solar and solar-plus-storage projects, as well as an undefined amount for other capacity resources.
NIPSCO seeks to retire the bulk of its coal generation capacity by 2023, and its October 2018 Integrated Resource Plan identified cheaper alternatives in renewables paired with storage.

Sungrow Energy Storage System Contracted for Massachusetts Solar+Storage Portfolio

Inverter supplier Sungrow has signed a contract to supply its fully integrated energy storage system to a 15-MW/32-MWh solar-plus-storage project in Massachusetts. The project will participate in ISO-New England wholesale markets after completion and is one of the first solar-plus-storage offerings to contribute to the Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART) Program, setting the benchmark for Massachusetts’ solar-plus-storage projects.

Guam Awards ENGIE 50MWp Solar Project with 300MWh of Storage Attached

Engie has been hired by Guam’s state electricity utility to build two solar-plus-storage plants with a combined capacity of 50MWp/300MWh on the Pacific island. The firm scooped up the project duo in the third round of Guam’s competitive renewable tender program after submitting the lowest bid. The plants will deliver more than 85GWh annually and are scheduled to be operational by 2022, according to Engie.

Oregon Utility Partners with Cities to Achieve Resiliency with Microgrids

Beaverton is the second Oregon city that will embrace microgrids for resiliency, working with utility Portland General Electric (PGE), which says it plans additional partnerships with cities. PGE’s microgrid projects are designed in part to provide resiliency if and when an earthquake hits the Oregon coast. The city of Beaverton will own their new emergency operations center, 300 kW of solar PV, and a 1,000 kW diesel standby generator. PGE will own the 250 kW storage system, which it will use, when available, for frequency control

The Republic of Nauru, like many Pacific Ocean island states relies almost entirely on diesel generators for its power. However, the government has decided raise the share of renewables in the power mix of the 21km² nation from 3% to 47% with a large-scale solar-plus-storage project. The power plant will have a solar capacity of 6 MW and 5 MW/2.5 MWh of storage. The system will be fully automated and integrated with the existing diesel system to optimize solar energy use, enable optimal battery energy storage system charging and discharging and allow optimal shut-off of the diesel engines.

The first residents of an all-electric and energy efficient community — the largest battery demand response project in the United States — are settling into new apartments. Their cars are tucked neatly beneath solar panel covers and their electric cars can plug into charging ports. Inside each apartment in the Soleil Lofts development, a battery is humming. When complete, the planned community’s 22 buildings will have 600 apartment units with 12.6 MWh of battery storage, 5.2 MW of solar panels, 150 stalls of EV chargers and an overriding focus on energy efficiency. Utility access to the 600 batteries will turn the complex into a grid resource.
